Smiles of a Summer Night

Smiles of a Summer Night 3 star

Neither one of the best Bergman movies I’ve seen nor even very memorable, this is most interesting to me since it formed the basis for a musical by one of my other favourite artists, Stephen Sondheim – “A Little Night Music”. I don’t even really know that musical very well at all, though I have a version of it in iTunes I’ve only really heard randomly shuffled pieces, and of course the classic songs like “Send in the Clowns”. Still, I recognised pieces, in some cases whole chunks of dialogue, in Bergman’s movie, so I imagine it would be a pretty interesting experience for big fans of that show. I personally found it kind of dumb, aside from Harriet Andersson being, again, beautiful as Petra the maid. It kind of reminded me of the Shakespeare comedies I’ve encountered – that or “Carry On” movies – a lot of semi-lame humour, not much story. I’ll watch it again, as I will all Bergman movies, because I’m only just now beginning to warm to him with this first viewings of most of his films – but I don’t think this will ever be a favourite.
