Slumber Party Massacre II

Slumber Party Massacre II 3 star

I had no idea whether my decision to watch all these movies in one go was gonna be a good idea or something I’d regret ever after. As this movie began, it looked pretty bad – I mean, could the opening titles be any tackier? Imagine a “Sweet Valley High” book sitting in amongst the cuts on the raw meat counter at your nearest, cheapest supermarket with porn muzak playing over the tannoy and you’re nearly there.

I won’t go so far as to say, “but then it picks up …” ... but this is just one of those movies where all I can say is, “Watch it,” because no amount of explaining could convey the insanity on display. It does follow on from the first movie, something which surprised me – the heroine here is the “little sister” from the first movie all grown up, still wearing hot pants and having nightmares where the stalker of the first movie, whose most interesting trait I found in the first movie was a complete lack of stylisation, is now stylised almost to “Rocky Horror Show” standards. His drill is now also an electric guitar; he wears all black leather; and he even precedes one killing with a full-blown musical number. Sigh the damage Freddy Krueger did to the horror genre, lol. But like I said, words don’t come close to the hilarity on offer here.

It’s bad. But it so completely defies any kind of expectation that you’ve gotta give it some kind of respect. And there’s a big other but from me personally, and that’s that this movie contains a scene that genuinely made me jump out of my skin and freaked me out this Halloween morning. It’s the point where the girl’s nightmares suddenly become real. I really and truly didn’t see it coming and I can honestly say that moment, the killer coming round the corner, realising everyone else can see him this time, actually scared me more than the similar moment of the girl coming out of the TV in “The Ring”, lol. I find scares like that very hard to come by, and that one single moment here really did it for me – the rest, though, I’ve gotta say, is simply side-splitting.
