I watched this purely for one reason, that it stars Alexa Vega who I overall thought was brilliant in Robert Rodriguez’s Spy Kids series of movies (she’s barely in the third, but what the hey). She is pretty much all that’s truly worth seeing here, but overall, I didn’t think it was that bad a movie.
Vega’s the unpopular girl at school (but, y’know, that strange movie kind of unpopular, where you’re still somewhat pretty, even capable of looking stunning at a pinch, and still have a handful of friends…) and she’s having a sleepover, but she’d rather be having a PARTY. One of the popular girls who are having a PARTY comes over for some reason and for some reason a bet is made for the “Lunch spot” – a fountain at high school where the popular people have their lunch, if you sit there, you’re popular. They have to perform a series of tasks (like dressing mannequins in their clothes, getting into an over-21s club, etc) and the first to do them all wins, it seems, popularity. Hilarity ensues.
I honestly can’t say it sucked. It passed the time decently enough, I laughed a few times, and Vega, like I said, is pretty great, especially in one short moment towards the end, where the “hot guy” of the movie asks her to dance at prom, and she just stands there, vacant expression, till one of her friends nudges her, “dude, he just said your name!” and, still vacant expression, she practically whimpers, “That was real?!” In that one moment, despite being drop-dead gorgeous in a perfect red dress and Hollywood Hair, and despite having 4 seemingly perfect friends, she actually still manages to sell the idea of what it’s like to be unpopular, unnoticed, and all those things that this movie is supposed to be about.
