Sleepaway Camp III: Teenage Wasteland

Sleepaway Camp III: Teenage Wasteland 3 star

The slightly-longer-than-planned (I had a little issue with two copies of this deciding they hated me) wait between part II and this has kind of worked against it – seriously, every time I think back on part II, I wanna see it more and the more I think it’s one of the most brilliant horror movies I’ve ever seen. Add to that my reading reviews of this third installment, learning it was shot back to back with part II … knowing that Pamela Springsteen again features prominently? My expectations couldn’t have been more painfully high.

While these 80 minutes did indeed more than cement Springsteen’s position in my mind as one of the better actresses I’ve seen, especially in this genre, I have to admit, it only makes me want to see Unhappy Campers again more. The frequency of chuckles and scares are just about evenly scattered enough to keep me focussed for the duration, but it’s fairly thinly spread with a lot of dead air.

Having now watched the full official trilogy (still kinda desperate to see the 34 minute unfinished 4th in the Anchor Bay box set lol) ... I have to say, consider me quite the (albeit about as surprised as I was with Slumber Party Massacre) fan of this series. I can be a total horror nut at times, but I have to say that my fandom of the genre is pretty fickle and fleeting – I watched the first of these movies merely for want of something better to do, and it pulled me back into the obsession with a fever. It’s definitely an unsung classic of a series and I’m overjoyed to see that efforts are being made to bring it back, with Springsteen or without.
