I’m pretty sure this will wind up being my favourite M. Night Shyamalan movie in the end. It’s one that holds my attention 100% from start to finish no matter how many times I see it, because it covers so many levels. I have a feeling that anyone, no matter what their philosophy, would find something to side with here. I find it amazing how Shyamalan manages to touch such deep emotions while at the same time having some real humour in there too – case in point being possibly the greatest group hug ever shot, as dad Mel Gibson breaks down over the family’s “last supper,” first terrifying his children who then come in to embrace him, tears start to roll then it’s broken as Mel grabs Joaquin Phoenix and drags him in too. I think what I love most about this movie is how it goes from extreme to extreme, from horror to humour, from hokum to high art. It’s really quite a masterpiece.
