It takes a long time to get going, but this movie has an amazing cast (Julie Christie, Goldie Hawn, Warren Beatty, pre-Star Wars Carrie Fisher, Jack Warden), and, as I’m learning was typical of director Hal Ashby, a great soundtrack. The ending is heartbreaking. I don’t often like Warren Beatty, but he really moved me towards the end of this movie. I can see a lot of this movie (and Coming Home, in fact) in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Boogie Nights – Hal Ashby was certainly influential on a lot of today’s filmmakers (I’ve noticed a lot of resemblance to Cameron Crowe, too).
