Secret Window

This was astoundingly better on a second viewing, so much so that I’m glad I never got round to writing a review of it back then. Mort Rainey as played by Johnny Depp will for me go down with the great horror anti-heroes – Nicholson’s Jack Torrance, Anthony Perkins’ Norman Bates (in particular), etc. It just didn’t hit me fully until I knew what the ending of the movie was. You don’t really get to know what’s going on in with Depp in this movie till the last 10-15 minutes, and it’s a nice surprise the first time round; but once you know what happens in those 15 minutes, almost the whole last half of the movie is more enjoyable/freaky – and when Johnny does those things with the spade, it’s all the more distressing. This movie seriously straddles the black comedy line in a nasty way, and survives.
