Scream
I just realised that even the poster for this movie declares it as a thriller rather than a horror. While I was watching it this time I realised more than ever that it is far more a comedy-thriller than a comedy-horror, if only because the more obvious horror elements come from such a different place from a typical generic slasher-fest and kind of cancel themselves out. I still remember the poor old woman sat near me when I saw it in 1996 who kept asking her companion, “why is everyone laughing?” lol.
Anyway, after over a decade, it’s a true classic. I’m serious. Okay, maybe it’s just because this is one of those movies that came out when I was just waking up to cinema and everything, and when I watch it now, I’m sure at least 5 years since I last saw it, it just, I don’t know, feels like home to me. It’s one of those movies that amazes me everytime, if only by the fact it still makes me laugh, like, even in the presence of the Scary Movie series. From the gripping Drew Barrymore opening, even that packed with gags for the horror fan (“Go down the street to the Mackenzies,”) to David Arquette’s Dewie (“What’d mom tell you? When I’m in this uniform you treat me like an officer of the law!”) and the many, many, many, many homages to just about every horror movie ever made, this is one movie I cannot take my attention off. There are so many random things I’d like to say about it that I think this one needs to go on my mental note of movies I wanna do fan commentaries for if I ever find such time to waste. Gimme it any day of the year and I’ll lap it up. OMG and I was about to write, “whatever happened to Skeet Ulrich??” and I looked him up on the IMDb and he’s 37! Anyway, he was quite cute in this movie. Yes sometimes I’m quite shallow and a little bi, lol.
I like creating triple bills. My thoughts here are to bookend it with Heathers and Donnie Darko – 3 decades of freaky high school eventualities.

[...] This movie baffles me immediately on two levels – first, I really thought Wes Craven had lost it after the Scream trilogy, Cursed being just a huge disappointment, and he seems to have embraced the remake-sequelitis of his old classics a little too much for my liking (much as I might be looking forward to the Last House remake). So it’s great, if surprising, to see he still definitely has ‘it’ here, and even better to find that he’s still most definitely a people person when it comes to his horror (more on that later). [...]
