Saw III

Saw III 2 stars

Like the other two in the series (the first of which I kinda loved but have yet to see a second time), this has aspirations to intelligence higher than your average gore-fest, and for all I know, it might succeed, and I can’t help but be just a little impressed. It is kind of impressive how tight a Trilogy (with a capital T) this is so far, but for me it’s almost to the series’ own detriment. The problem for me personally this time around (aside from the TV movie acting) was that the movie really seems to think you care so much about the whole series and story that you’ve been sitting around the house for the past year really actively wondering about the loose ends, desperate for the truth to finally be revealed. And it’s just not that interesting or important, no matter how technically accomplished it may be. The big twists and turns at the end just didn’t mean much to me because for me the details of the first two movies were just massive McGuffins to provide a background to disgusting scenes of terror and were quickly forgotten after the end credits rolled. I’ll likely rent these once they’re all out on DVD and give them my full attention as a whole (not buy, take note, ‘cos this damn well better not be the end of the series – the way they end this one made me madder than any cliffhanger in history – way to end the story on the highest drama you’ve got, lol) ... and maybe then I’ll change my mind big style … but, till then, I have to say, slick, yes, oddly impressive script work, yes, but ultimately pretty worthless.
