Santa Claus

Santa Claus 3 star

It’s overblown and might as well be called Supersanta, lol, but I love it all the same. Lavish, if occasionally gaudy, production design, lush music, John Lithgow hamming it up as the baddie, cute kids, Dudley Moore truly endearing as Patch, I could go on. I watch this now perhaps over 20 years since I first saw it on the big screen, when I probably still fully believed in Santa, and really, it hasn’t lost anything over the years, it just takes me back instantly, I’ve only to hear Henry Mancini’s quirky elf theme and I’m there. I don’t normally mention IMDb points and stuff ‘cos I know it doesn’t really matter, but 4.8 really is an insult to a movie that has such obvious love and care behind it. Sure, the second half is cheesy and wobbly as hell (does Santa really deliver the line, “Will you do it for little Joey?” ... oh yes …), but the richness of the beginning more than makes up for it for me.
