Damn … second pleasant surprise of the day, or is my brain finally on its deathbed? I really found this one shockingly funny – when even a way too extended scene revolving around waste disposal made me laugh at least the Kermode-recommended five times, well … I don’t know how to finish that sentence, lol. And that’s before the beautifully terrifying Jeff Daniels and Kristin Chenoweth family. I didn’t expect to get around to watching anything today because my attention felt particularly scattered, and that’s why I picked seemingly simple comedies – but this one had me absolutely glued, eyes wide and beaming like a crazy person, for just about its whole duration. I hadn’t even realised till I saw his name in the opening credits that it was directed by Barry Sonnenfeld – I’d just heard of it as like yet another dumb comedy – but there’s a whole lot more to this thing, like I said even the poop gag made me laugh more than it should’ve … it’s in your face as you’d expect from any recent comedy yet at all turns it’s almost cringe-makingly real, I’m sure someone involved here based it on actual experience. I’ve been on two similar holidays in my life and though they weren’t nearly as horrible, I still recognised stuff I’d almost forgotten about. I’m in a short review mode right now, I’m afraid, but I could probably babble about how much I loved this one for ages … I really, really loved it.
