Robots
Perhaps inevitably, this one doesn’t work so well on a second viewing, but it’s still better than I initially thought it was going to be. The animation is flawless but I can’t for the life of me think why I had this pegged for a possible Oscar nomination for best original screenplay, it’s really just a collection of gags. Makes me laugh though, and the message continues to be fairly astonishing: astonishing in that a major film studio – surely one of the forces to blame for making the general public feel inadequate, in need of “upgrades”, etc – produced such a thing.
“There goes our happy ending.”
“Nah-uh! It’s a fusion of jazz and funk, we call it … junk!”
I was gonna use the quote for some purpose or other in this review but I’m tired so I’m just throwing it in anyway, love that ending
20th May 2005:
For what it’s worth, which is not much so far, Robots turns out to be the best movie I’ve seen of 2005, and I started out watching it expecting, even wanting, to hate it. It does start with a string of the lamest gags ever, and I do find it weird that with all our technology, the latest CG blockbuster chooses synthetic subject matter, but ultimately it’s quite disarming like most CG efforts. I love Robin Williams, too, even the fart gags. And the message can’t be ignored.
