Resident Evil

Resident Evil

I don’t know the games, so I don’t know how in the dark I was on this movie compared to its target audience. Forgive anything I say that sounds stupid.

I don’t know if the games start this way all the time, but I thought that having Milla Jovovich wake up not remembering why she is where she is, finding the red dress, the guns, etc, was a great way into a game adaptation. Better than great: perfect. That’s exactly what we do when we play games. We don the garb and suddenly find ourselves able to do things we can’t usually do. Just a thought, and I don’t even know if it’s valid. I’m still years away from owning a games console, though I always have moments of wanting one… this movie though kind of made me really want one, just to play Resident Evil. So really, I have to say the movie is a success, don’t I?

The movie runs out of steam towards the end, mainly because all the real shocks are thrown at us too fast. The laser tunnel scene is an instant horror classic. You don’t even see a lot, but it made me weak.

Also great is having a little girl’s voice as the main villain, a supercomputer. As The Exorcist, The Omen, Village of the Damned have shown, there’s simply nothing scarier than scary kids.

And you can’t badmouth a movie that has Milla Jovovich enter wrapped in a shower curtain, exit wrapped in a towel, and kick ass in a red dress and boots.
