Rear Window [1954]
I’m really more a fan, like most people I think, of Hitchcock’s “Golden Era” from Vertigo up to Marnie. I like a few early ones like the original The Man Who Knew Too Much and The Trouble With Harry but my brain always remembers most early Hitch, like this one, as being sort of sterile. I’d forgotten until this viewing just how electrifying Rear Window is at times.
The set is the star of the movie really, an entire living complex built in the studio. It’s a director’s dream, the camera allowed pretty much anywhere. There’s a story hidden away somewhere here about a murder that might not be a murder, etc… but mostly this movie is just a voyeuristic wish fulfilment. It’s just so much fun to roam with the camera from window to window, and the film makers have come up with the most delightful collection of odd inhabitants.
I never consider this a movie I could watch at any old time, but it’s always a pleasure to see it.
