Push [2009] 4 star

I’ve gotta say, the time of year this came out and the kind of director attached, it felt all too much like this year’s Jumper. I looked forward to Jumper because it had AnnaSophia Robb in it; it seemed like a decent concept; and Doug Liman did good stuff with the likes of Go … it turned out to be one of the most missable releases of the year and AnnaSophia was barely even in it lol. This one, I should’ve been excited to see for Dakota Fanning, but at the time I was feeling particularly cold towards her work. Instead, I was marginally intrigued by the bright colours of its visual style, but I still decided it could easily wait till DVD to see.

Well, whaddya know … I really had a blast watching this. Dakota Fanning is better than she has been in a long, long time. The concept of the movie is familiar of course running anywhere between Firestarter and X-Men but Paul McGuigan directs it in a wonderfully manic fashion that seemed to me like a cross between Luc Besson or Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Terry Gilliam. The visual effects are seamless despite this manic style and it all has a believable weight to it when unseen forces are at work. I found that for what it is, this movie genuinely could not have been better and I will watch it again for sure.
