This movie is so cute in the end that I can’t possibly begin to criticise it. It has a certain immediate charm that comes with any movie with Phoebe Cates at its centre – I’m completely mystified as to why she pretty much vanished from the spotlight after this, she’s still absolutely enchanting here as she was in Gremlins and Drop Dead Fred, but even here she gets second billing in the opening credits after Jim Broadbent? Was he big in the early nineties? Whatever … it only makes me love her more, lol, kind of a “nobody puts baby in the corner,” thing or something I guess. Production design and cinematography could use some help (and it pains me to say that, it’s shot by one of my faves Freddie Francis, immediately perked me up in the opening credits), but basically, the movie’s all about Cates, a strange combo of Nell and Sommersby that’s just, basically, too cute for words.
