Port of Call

Port of Call 4 star

Another early Bergman movie I was surprised to find myself enjoying more than his later more reknowned stuff. The lead in this movie is extraordinarily different. She’s very “normal-looking”, yet she’s made up like a noir-type heroine. She really made an impression on me, but the actress (Nine-Christine Jönsson) didn’t do a lot before or after.

The story’s pretty simple and opens, typically Bergman, with a girl trying to kill herself. She turns out to be a girl with a lot of problems, with a lot of history, who nobody’s giving a fair chance to shine (basic attitude of the villains in this movie: “You screwed up last time, you’ll screw up again”). She meets a guy and things seem great but when she finally opens up to him, he gets scared, and in becoming scared, he begins to despise himself for not being able to take her confession as bravely as he thought he could. Very cute resolution, and for a second I thought it was going to fizzle out, but overall, another Bergman movie I see myself watching again.
