Play Misty for Me

Play Misty for Me 3 star

I’d heard the title of this movie many times before but I never thought it would turn out to be basically the inspiration for Fatal Attraction. As with another Clint Eastwood movie I saw recently, Dirty Harry, I was kind of surprised by the grittiness. Compared to this, Fatal Attraction is (like a lot of Adrian Lyne’s work, I guess) a music video.

Clint Eastwood did a pretty amazing job considering this was his first movie as director – his decisions are pretty bold. He only falls down in two scenes that enhance each others awfulness by being placed side by side in the editing process – a horrendously long and cheesy love scene, and some strange music concert montage. These scenes seem to be there in order to make the audience feel like “ah, everything’s back to normal,” but you only really realise that fairly pointless purpose after you’ve spent 10 minutes thinking, “did I sit on the remote or something?”

Nice thriller, anyway.
