Phantasm III: Lord of the Dead
“It’s NEVER over!”
This one whisks by with a mere 80 minute runtime and contains a lot more laughs whilst also being freaky enough, and it really starts the whole epic journey that I can’t wait to see concluded in “Phantasm’s End” or whatever it ends up being called (but of course, like the Man says, it’s never over :))
I just really get caught up in this one, despite the number of times I’ve been annoyed by sequels that attempt to expand the universe of their predecessors. Brains inside the spheres, Jody coming back, I just buy it all. What it lacks in the ethereal compared to the original it makes up for with pure pace and good humour. And ahhhh! The cliffhanger! I’d totally forgotten about that. I watched this immediately before going to bed, stupid … lol.
November 14th 2005:
This one keeps the insanity a little higher than Phantasm II did, as well as impressively bringing back the two actors who played Mike and Jody in the original. The score is nicely beefed up too. I guess though it’s ultimately as forgettable as any average horror sequel. Just the commentary (not listened to yet) and trailer on this DVD.
