5, 7 years ago, you’d said there was a movie with Nic Cage and Julianne Moore in, I’d likely have peed my pants. Even now, it’s just a little exciting and almost reason enough to see a movie. But this all does feel a little late, and it’s one of those movies that, from the title on down, feels a little ill-fitting for all its stars bar Jessica Biel, who it almost suits (okay, she was good in The Illusionist but I still have my prejudice lol).
Ultimately, and I know their stories are not exactly similar but the whole flow of the thing is close enough (the scene where hero convinces love interest of his “power” is pretty uncanny, though), I’d recommend Deja Vu over this in a heartbeat. There’s something about the way Julianne Moore’s crew end up blindly following just about everything Cage says (yeh, fine, he proves himself and all but still, come on) that is so ridiculous in the end it makes the whole suspension of disbelief thing pretty hard. And really, though this does have some clever moments, I think that’s the end of that.
With any luck Cage and Moore will meet again in better circumstances. Also, I absolutely refuse to believe this is a Mark Isham score, lol. Had the credit read John Powell, I might actually have said some nice words about it, which probably makes me some kind of snob but that’s just the truth; Isham can do way better. Also (last also, I promise) ... where in the hell is the ending? lol. It was 3 stars until the credits rolled at least 15 minutes too early.
