Napoleon Dynamite

Napoleon Dynamite

Beautiful. I didn’t know anything about this movie before seeing it, except it had a weird poster and generally looked weird (enough to buy me anyday, lol). I was frankly left speechless by this movie. Next to Puss in Boots in Shrek 2 (“aww, look at his wee lil’ boots…”), Tina Majorino totally takes the place of cutest thing on screen this year, as the plainest movie girlfriend in history. The final shot of her and Napoleon playing is just perfect.

Everything is so perfectly observed (Napoleon taking his friend Pedro’s tater tots… but not just a handful – every single last one, in one handful, picking up the one he drops on the way, and stuffing them all into his trouser pocket; the way he runs off in such a goofy fashion at the end of nearly every scene, even after doing a fairly co-ordinated dance in front of the whole school) and even the tiniest lines are hilarious.

If you have the slightest bit of geek in you, you’ll love this movie. Maybe we’ll get to see the filmmakers on the DVD or something, but I’m guessing this movie is very personal, nobody could possibly portray these characters so perfectly without pretty much having been them, lol…

I wanted to find a decent sized picture of Tina Majorino to post with this review, especially in the big-sleeved pink dress, lol (complete with the side pony-tail, crimped!) that she wears to the school dance (“Time After Time” being used once again in movies to watery-eyed effect – think Strictly Ballroom by really sheltered people)… but this was the best I could get, capped off the trailer on the Apple trailer page:

Tina Majorino

I’ve been told by many that I AM THE shy deb look alike. It’s nice to finally find a decent pic of her and find…she really does look like me to the point it scares me! Therefore, my like entire school is calling me by the name of shy deb now. Uh, what can I say…? It’s scary how much she is like me from what I’ve found out also. She’s five foot four(same as me) same hair color and I found out, the same favorite color…blue! Thee gods are out to make me go in shock! I plan on buying this movie to watch it on DVD this weekend and hope to enjoy it as much as my whole school does!

  16. […] This movie is bad in ways no other movie has ever ventured. It’s as if Jared and Jerusha Hess have no idea what made Napoleon Dynamite so beautiful and, taken aback by its success, rushed into making what they think is an imitation of that movie’s crowd-pleasing highlights, only to deliver a dead, oversimplified wreck that never garners more than a mono-syllabic “ha” on the laughter front. Be fooled by the catchy music if you like (and it is catchy, btw, that’ll be the 1 star), but this is one I’ll be developing a blind spot for in the future. The IMDb reviewers trying to use racism as a reason why this movie is bad are really missing a trick – it’s just plain bad, no reason required. I worried when I first saw Napoleon Dynamite that I was merely being “hip” about my adulation for it. This movie, if nothing else, at least serves to highlight the difference between good and bad.
