This movie is bad in ways no other movie has ever ventured. It’s as if Jared and Jerusha Hess have no idea what made Napoleon Dynamite so beautiful and, taken aback by its success, rushed into making what they think is an imitation of that movie’s crowd-pleasing highlights, only to deliver a dead, oversimplified wreck that never garners more than a mono-syllabic “ha” on the laughter front. Be fooled by the catchy music if you like (and it is catchy, btw, that’ll be the 1 star), but this is one I’ll be developing a blind spot for in the future. The IMDb reviewers trying to use racism as a reason why this movie is bad are really missing a trick – it’s just plain bad, no reason required. I worried when I first saw Napoleon Dynamite that I was merely being “hip” about my adulation for it. This movie, if nothing else, at least serves to highlight the difference between good and bad.
