As with Shogun Assassin, which I watched recently, I have to admit, really for me this was only ever going to be a background thing. But as such, I couldn’t have asked for more. The music is catchy if clichéd and fairly omnipresent, by the man who went on to write the chilling Nightmare on Elm Street theme, no less; and when Charles Bronson kicks ass it’s always worth a good glance at the TV screen, and a lot of fun. The screenplay is by Elmore Leonard which I think will be noteworthy to some but don’t ask me, I’ve only ever seen Jackie Brown and Out of Sight, never read any of his novels.
Anyway, there’s something about these B-ish-movies of the 70s that makes them never fail, and it’s possible I’m just a sucker for the music, but I’m sure it’s more than that. Like, when you think about it, these movies are the equivalent of the straight-to-video horror and plastic starlet vehicles we’re forced to sit through today (well, that’s a bit strong, but if you’re anything like me . . .), and when you watch this brand of what ultimately amounts to inconsequential crap yet somehow is perfectly entertaining, you can’t help but wonder, is it so hard to make a semi-watchable movie? When would you catch Cruise, Pitt or Clooney playing a melonfarmer? Even Seagal or Van Damme? This movie is worth it for the machine-gunning watermelons scene alone, lol. Day of the Jackal eat your heart out
