Memoirs of a Geisha

Memoirs of a Geisha 3 star

I had a feeling as soon as this movie began that it might suffer from my personal Jane Eyre syndrome – interesting while the main character is a curious, sad-eyed, basically, interesting child, wondering what she’s meant to be, kind of just getting swept along in life, but sort of slow and plain miserable when it flashes forwards to her all grown up and … geishing? :P Honestly, it has its moments but I really didn’t feel that engaged by the whole thing.

The samey John Williams score trying to sound like Tan Dun doesn’t help much either (don’t get me wrong, I’ll probably find myself listening to it quite a bit in iTunes and it’s probably his best work of the year but it just doesn’t fit the movie too well to my ears). It all feels to me like Crouching Tiger with all that is interesting sucked out, and I can’t imagine myself watching it again.

It did leave me with one thought, though – Rob Marshall to direct Miss Saigon, please :-)
