Melinda and Melinda
I loved the concept of this movie when I first heard about it – a dinner party conversation turns to our perception of life’s sticky situations: some see life as a comedy, some as a tragedy. Then we see a girl’s life play out both ways. Like we used to get points in exams just for putting our name on the paper, Woody Allen gets points right away right there for that premise, I love it. I love Radha Mitchell and Will Ferrell, too.
Sadly, it turns into the usual Woody Allen talky neurotic thing (I know, I can’t complain, what the heck did I expect? lol) And the whole thing is far more subtle than I expected. The difference between the tragedy and the comedy is only very slight – but I suppose this may be the point, and I would love to watch the movie again without the expectations I brought to this viewing. Ferrell does a great job in the “Woody Allen Role”, btw… I’ve never seen him so restrained, it’s almost frightening. Radha Mitchell I had down for an Oscar nomination, but she didn’t make much of an impression. A better movie to go to sleep to than Kingdom of Heaven, though. It gets 3 stars, but I feel compelled to point out that it’s only a very low 3.
