Manhattan

Manhattan 4 star

This probably is Woody Allen’s “best” film if we’re talking in plain old boring film student / art critic terms, and it certainly raised – to my surprise – more laughs from me than the bulk of his work. But really I think the two truly great things about it are the Gershwin music, which I don’t think I’ve ever appreciated as much as I did here, and Gordon Willis’ photography – and the movie unfortunately never really tops the fantastic opening shots of the city accompanied by “Rhapsody in Blue”. I’d happily watch it any time again, but it’s by no means one of my favourite Woody Allen movies – that honour still belongs to Everyone Says I Love You.
