Manderlay

Manderlay 5 star

This movie is obviously supposed to be very discomforting etc, like Dogville before it, but I found it almost deliriously comforting. Though cast members have changed, and others been recast in new roles, the movie follows on seamlessly from the first movie in the trilogy and makes its point with just as much sneaky elegance. You can really see the horrifically mischievous glint Lars Von Trier has in his eye sometimes watching these movies. John Hurt’s narration only enforces this tone even more. While I realise I’m probably putting this up top of my 2005 movies list because it’s among the more recent I’ve seen, and like Dogville before it, it will probably sink with each viewing, not like Breaking the Waves or Dancer in the Dark or even perhaps Dear Wendy which Von Trier wrote, it’s still I think one of the most important films of the year. I can’t wait to see Wasington.
