Man on the Moon
I wish I had the time to write a longer review of this one … I promise one day it will come because this is truly one of my all-time faves. Jim Carrey’s performance is terrific – I have to admit, I still haven’t seen any of the real Andy Kaufman’s work (I’m sure I said last time I reviewed this – review that appears to have gone astray – that I planned to seek it out … oh well …) but I almost feel like I either don’t need to or don’t want to. Kinda like Basquiat and Ed Wood (which was written by the same guys who wrote this), it paints a picture of its subject that’s just so succinct and yet almost vague too, you truly get the impression of having met somebody and known them and you just ‘get’ them through and through, in your own way. In this movie, that crossover point for me is the exchange between Andy and Lynne – “You don’t know the real me.” “There isn’t a real you.” “Oh yeh. I forgot.” I just realised the movie reminds me of The Life and Death of Peter Sellers, too, which I also loved. I guess I’m just a whore for misunderstood artist stories, lol. No bad thing in my opinion
I love the use of the R.E.M. music here, too.
