Mad Hot Ballroom

Mad Hot Ballroom 4 star

Ah, another documentary about The Kids! This is a lot like Rock School – it’s just dancing instead of music. Or, They Shoot Horses, Don’t They? with little people.

I was worried going in that like so many so-called documentaries / reality TV shows / etc these days, the movie would veer too far towards the competitive side of things, the way parents push their kids etc (Spellbound is an example of how this kind of behaviour isn’t limited to contact sports). There’s one teacher in particular who cries way too much, like her tears are activated by the presence of a camera (and I thought the guys crying over football in Friday Night Lights were crazy), and one of the kids’ moms tellingly has the Rocky theme for her ringtone, but mercifully this movie mostly focuses on the love and the fun involved.

The movie loses its way in places, kind of unsure as to what it’s really about, random scattered interviews with the kids talking about gender, dreams, street thugs and anything else that crosses their mind. Sometimes it’s funny, sometimes it’s sad, sometimes it’s plain annoying, but mostly it’s interesting. Then they dance and they’re good, like the kids were good in Rock School, and you realise that it doesn’t matter what your opinion is on the whole program, it’s going on and it gets some stunning results.
