This is one of those fairly dull old “problem pictures” – Steve McQueen gets Natalie Wood pregnant and they spend most of the movie wondering “what ever shall we do?” whilst really, surprise surprise, they’re falling in love – it’s pretty badly dated in places and made duller by the style which is similar to the Karel Reisz / Tony Richardson British New Wave stuff of the time. There are some vibrant busy home scenes, Natalie Wood is wonderfully raw, and Elmer Bernstein as always turns in some great music, but there’s so much standing around in between the peaks that it’s safe to say I won’t think about this one much in the future.

Surprisingly cute ending, though … Steve McQueen has never looked – and probably will never look – better in my eyes, and I love how the moment is shot.
