Love Story

Love Story 4 star

I think it must be years since I last saw this movie and I’m glad because I got a lot more out of it than I ever have before. Maybe it’s ‘cos I’m pretty much the same age as the two protaganists right now. It’s so full of quotable lines (“Love means never having to say you’re sorry,” of course, “What can you say about a 25 year old girl who died?” – not a spoiler, don’t worry), Francis Lai’s score, though a little repetive, is unforgettable, and Ryan O’Neal and Ali MacGraw are not only perfectly cast, their performances are nearly flawless. The movie is nowhere near as cheesy and melodramatic as I remembered it – it goes to that extreme, sure, but it also has really raw, almost uncomfortably real moments like O’Neal holding MacGraw in the hospital bed. This is one I’ll be adding to my DVD collection at some point.
