Lord of War
Wow. This movie just gets better as it goes on. I love Andrew Niccol’s Gattaca and The Truman Show and even S1m0ne, and his style definitely shows through in his story work on The Terminal, so I expected big things of this movie, but my expectations got lower the less I heard about it. Sometimes the movie feels about 10 years old, in its style, in its dialogue, but I’m putting that down to the good period setting and the fact I haven’t seen Nicolas Cage in anything in ages. From the stunning bullet POV opening sequence to the final pull-back over a floor covered in the things, this movie is full of great images and visual effects, it runs the emotions from laughs to tears, and the ending is just a jawdropper – it’s no wonder they had to resort to foreign funds to get this thing made, and I’m still amazed they got away with the last few minutes. Forget The Constant Gardener and Good Night And Good Luck., this is where the balls really were last year.
