Ladder 49

Mixed feelings about this movie. Pretty darn well made, nice performances, but it’s pretty much a Backdraft retread with better effects that has a bit more resonance after 9/11… only… kind of a little too late? (of course, had they tried to release it sooner, there would maybe have been offence taken by some)

It reminds me of what I said about 21 Grams. You can’t help but feel pretty heavy emotions when death and hurt are rendered so realistically… but in some cases, a documentary would be more effective. Otherwise, there’s nothing new here, and in place of that absence, there’s plenty that’s pretty bad: cheesy song montages of happiness, freeze-frames without the impact a freeze-frame should have.

I cried though. That’s more than can be said for a lot of movies this year.
