King Kong

King Kong 3 star

Disappointing is the wrong word to use for this movie ‘cos really I didn’t expect much, though the latest ‘emotional’ trailers got my hopes up a little too much. Peter Jackson has remained almost ridiculously close to the 1933 movie, adding nothing but colour, comedy, and an hour. I’m quite amazed by the degree of worship this movie is getting. It’s good, sure, but that good? The effects aren’t far along from Jurassic Park on the dinosaurs side, and did they really bother putting Andy Serkis in the motion capture suit to get this Kong that at turns looks either like bad CG or okay Harryhausen? Only the creepy crawlies really looked good to me. Howard Shore James Newton Howard’s score is no match for Max Steiner’s, either. It picks up plenty on all levels, emotionally, technically, everything, towards the end, but it’s really too little far too late (plus that hour). Do something small next, Peter [edit: ooh, The Lovely Bones sounds like just the ticket :-) ] ... the ice rink scene is beautiful though.
