Okay, trying this again, I’ve lost a handful of reviews twice over through my own stupidity and laziness, lol. In short, this movie didn’t do much for me at all and that surprised me ‘cos, y’know, Kevin Spacey, Jeff Bridges, intelligent-sounding screenplay, I really thought it couldn’t go wrong. Yet though the movie looks and sounds great and Spacey and Bridges are as competent as usual, I just didn’t like how it felt (to me, at least) like the film makers hadn’t made up their mind about what is actually going on with Prot. Like, I love movies that leave things open etc, but this one is just a walking contradiction. I was happy to accept that Prot was autistic or something, but the whole thing with the girl disappearing at the end and his dramatically dark repressed memory just grated on me. Gimme a double bill of Mysterious Skin and Girl, Interrupted or Snow Cake or something. Maybe the movie just caught me at the wrong time. It just really didn’t work for me.
