Jungle Fever

Jungle Fever

Strange… I was about to begin this review by saying, “I’ve never been a great fan of Spike Lee…” until I realized that until Jungle Fever, of all his films I’d only ever seen 25th Hour, which I loved. So who knows where I got the idea I had any negative opinion of the guy.

I loved Jungle Fever too, even though it’s not one of Lee’s more celebrated movies. I was surprised by my reaction to it really. It’s incredibly obvious in getting its message across, something that usually bugs me… but I think it’s the fact that it pushes the obviousness just that little bit farther. The final shot says it all, Wesley Snipes having a vision of his daughter all grown up, a stoned prostitute, and that ultimate of clichés, a long pullback as the main character yells, “Noooooooooooooo!” It sent a shiver down my spine, that’s for sure.

I’ll be working my way through Spike Lee’s catalogue now, that’s for definite.
