Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius
I actually really loved this movie. To look at still pictures and posters would have, and pretty much did, put me off… it looks like an entirely made for kids production and I guess the total irony here is that I want to say, I guess I love the movie because it makes me realise how nuts over it I would’ve gone ten years ago. The whole into space sequence – the kids use fairground rides and ride them into space – is both imaginative and beautiful, capped by the half-gawk by Jimmy at the “hot girl” of the show and him regaining his “I hate girls” composure much to her dissappointment. The music is really great. The animation – even though the character design is even freakier than Powerpuff Girls – is bizarrely “realistic” (by that I mean photo-real, really 3-D) and wonderful, and the story is a solid and funny one. Like Patrick Stuart says on the DVD behind-the-scenes documentary, you have never seen aliens like this. They are truly extraordinary.
I think I’ve only seen one other Nickolodean movie production and that was Harriet the Spy which is a personal favourite of mine. Like Harriet, this movie quite easily ranks among the best kids’ movies ever – and by that I mean that, were I to have kids, I would feel lost without them in my collection. They’re movies that simultaneously teach and respect the ageless child, and that’s why I love them myself.
