This movie adaptation of the musical is just a little surreal and extremely, almost horribly, dated, but there is something about it, I don’t know what, that really penetrated my soul in a big way. Like the more recent video adaptation, and the musical style itself I guess, it combines the ancient setting with modern visuals. As my mum put it so succinctly at one point, some of them look like the Village People, lol. It really is quite badly dated, can’t stress that enough. Mostly I’d take the more recent version over this, Glenn Carter’s Jesus and Jerome Pradon’s Judas are infinitely better, but Yvonne Elliman, who plays Mary here, is really quite unmissable and the location shooting is pretty fantastic.
