Jaws: The Revenge

Jaws: The Revenge 2 stars

Again, I honestly don’t get the animosity towards these sequels. It seems a lot of the criticism stems from the fact they’re either not realistic (that sharks don’t “just attack”; that if they do then it’s our own stupid fault for trespassing on their territory) or that they show us too much of the monster. Like people are actually coming to Jaws movies expecting some massive appraisal of the shark species with David Attenborough in the lead? Maybe I just don’t get it. I thought they were monster movies, no realism necessary. And showing too much? Sure, it’s a problem; but one that plenty and worse sequels could equally be criticised for. I don’t know what people expect from a Jaws sequel, but it certainly seems like too much to me. Let’s not forget that in this case we’re also talking about the early days of VHS. This has its stupid moments, but Michael Caine is fun, the music is there, and there are some really nice, actually pretty scary moments. I guess what I’m saying is there are far worse movies than this.
