Jaws 3-D

Jaws 3-D 3 star

I know I’ve seen this before, I remember the whole “Seaworld”-a-like tunnel bit of course; but I don’t think I’ve ever enjoyed it as much as I did this time around, and I couldn’t help but think how much fun it must’ve been to see on the big screen, in 3-D, with a crazy audience back in 1983. As it is, even in 2-D, the 3-D is so obvious it almost has an effect, and at the key moments, eg, Jaws smashing through the glass, you can practically hear that audience screaming with excitement, lol. Well I could, anyway.

Looking into the whole thing, it seems the movie began, not unlike the horror movie Slumber Party Massacre, as a kind of spoof of the genre/franchise (with the fantastically fitting title “Jaws 3 People 0”) – it seems that idea was abandoned, but, as in the case of Slumber Party…, there is certainly a sense of mockery that remains, and it almost reminds me of the bizarre lightness to be found in another Spielberg threequel, Jurassic Park III.

There is of course, again like Slumber Party…, plenty of unintentional humour too. But I feel just like Supergirl which I watched yesterday, this one is fun even when it’s terrible. Truly a B-movie experience to revel in. It crumbles if taken seriously, but really, was this series ever meant to be serious? I guess it all depends how highly you regard the original, and for me, that ain’t ridiculously high as some.
