Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles

Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles 4 star

As one of the first “real” movies I watched when I was around 14 or 15, this movie will always have a place in my heart, and I’ll always get a little nervous about watching it, worried my memory will be ruined. Overall, this movie’s sadder, more homo-erotic, and just a little clunkier than I remember, but it’s still among the best films of the Nineties. I find it funny how I never even noticed the homo-erotic element when I first watched it, and even stranger that the movie apparently got criticised in some circles for not being homo-erotic enough ... I mean, it’s kinda blatant when Lestat is talking about Claudia being his and Louis’ daughter, lol. You can view this whole movie as some weird metaphor for the crumbling of the family institution. At the same time it’s like Gone with the Wind in the melodrama department, just with vampires instead. It’s a truly bizarre movie, and Eliot Goldenthal’s score is absolutely beautiful, especially the Claudia piano theme.
