Interview [2007] 3 star

As far as it goes, this movie is a fairly thrilling mindgame with the two most unlikely of opponents – a “famous ‘cos she’s famous” type It girl played quite aptly by Sienna Miller, and a political journalist for unknown reasons sent to interview her, played by Steve Buscemi who also directs. I haven’t seen any of Theo Van Gogh’s films, and this is one in what apparently will be a series of remakes of them. I noticed a quite corny reference to his name at the start – the truck Buscemi’s taxi crashes into has his name on the side. It’s like the MacGuffin that sets the story in motion, like, Van Gogh is why we’re all here for the next hour. Cute, I guess. (Apparently, he’s also in a photograph in Miller’s apartment – didn’t notice that one, of course).

The problem is, it pretty much ends just as it’s getting started. The end credits roll at 75 minutes and I would’ve been happy with at least a further half hour. It’s a clever, albeit rather stagey, bit of fun while it lasts … but I felt it was building to something much more incendiary, and the ending is a rather disappointing fizzling out.
