Hysteria [1965]
This is a very odd movie I’d never head of, directed by genius cinematographer Freddie Francis. It’s interesting to note that he directed a total of 3 movies the same year – in addition to this, he made the mesmerizing anthology horror Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors, and another I’ve not yet seen called The Skull. The opening of this movie would easily fit into one of those Amicus movies – a guy seems to have amnesia, yet he remembers a car crash, and all the evidence he has of who he may or may not be is a photograph of a beautiful woman. Suddenly a stranger is being far too nice to him. Certain things seem too good to be true … and of course, they are … [insert maniacal laughter here]
The whole thing is very Hitchcockian – there’s even a blindingly blatant homage to the Pyscho shower scene towards the end. It’s all very sneaky and clever and good to have on in the background. But really it just made me want to watch Dr. Terror and get impatient for The Innocents DVD.
