Howling III: The Marsupials

Howling III: The Marsupials 2 stars

Yeh, I don’t know why I do it to myself either … ;-)

I was so ready to give this one a mauling, so to speak. Part II (Your Sister is a Werewolf) was ridiculously bad and it starred Christopher Lee. This installment has the same director and its biggest name is Barry Humphries (Dame Edna Everage), who only actually appears for a few seconds. But to be honest, while it’s not remotely scary (the closest it comes are some Exorcist-like bed-thrashing and hypnosis scenes), it does at least have more than its fair share of laughs. The acting isn’t great, but it’s at least better than that of Part II – the Aussie aspect of the movie has me placing it on a par with the soaps, closer to “Neighbours” than “Cell Block H”. It even has a kinda beautiful (if ridiculous and creepy) scene of birth. It’s kinda weird how comfortable the daddy is when he’s introduced to his creepy child thing, but hey, it’s also kinda cute in a freaky warped utopian way too. I still remember the first time I saw the original Howling and the ending kinda left me choked up for some reason, so this little moment at least gave me hope for the rest of the series which I was planning to watch anyway even after the diabolical first sequel.

And hey, don’t knock the dialogue, either, here’s a few moderately smart snippets:

“It’s synchronicity. There’s no such thing as coincidence.”

“You’ll turn into a river, then a rainbow, then a mountain.”
“No way – I’m just gonna die.”

“He fell in love … with the Russian werewolf.”
“Was it female?”
“Yes.”
“Well … thank Christ for that!”

“And there are more things in earth and heaven, Horatio than you can shake a boomerang at!”

In short, a huge improvement on Part II, and that fact can’t be overstated. It’s a pity Mora didn’t stay on the franchise longer, ‘cos to me it seemed he was really beginning to get the hang of it here. Of course, none of this changes the fact that it’s still a stupid horror sequel :-P
