Her Alibi
I still remember seeing this on a weekend at school when most people went home but the hardcore boarders stayed behind having the kind of fun best summed up by the fact that this movie was obviously a highlight to stay with me so long
Anyway I remember loving the hell out of it and it feels like I’ve been meaning to watch it again all 15+ years since. Looking at the opening credits, I was kind of amazed at the names involved – little me had some taste! – Freddie Francis as cinematographer, Ann Roth costume designing, Georges Delerue composing … heck, even Bruce Beresford is no hack as a director. When the movie got its first laugh from me within minutes (Computer: “Are you sure you wish to delete this file?” Selleck: “Yes, Goddammit!” Computer:”Probably a wise decision.”) I got kind of excited, could this be some kind of prodigal favourite of mine?
Well, yes and no. Tom Selleck, sue me if you must, makes me laugh (here he does, anyway). Paulina Porizkova is stunningly beautiful, worth the movie for alone really, and Freddie Francis’ photography only makes her look better. She certainly didn’t deserve a Razzie nomination anyway. But all in all, it’s a really really silly movie, very much more background stuff than edge-of-your-seat, don’t-miss-a-frame perfection. Of course, you knew that because it stars Tom Selleck and it happened in the 80s
But none of that will stop me from watching it again … and hopefully a lot sooner next time.
