Hellbound: Hellraiser II

Hellbound: Hellraiser II 3 star

Ah. This one I remember too – half of it, at least. I remembered the girl with the puzzles (though I remembered her being younger) and the return of the wicked stepmother. The second half of this movie, however, is much, much crazier than I remembered. This sequel doesn’t quite fit in with my theory that my favourite horror movies always seem to be the part twos, but the craziness of the second half definitely sits well with sequels like the homo-erotic Freddy’s Revenge, the insane Slumber Party Massacre II, the evil Sleepaway Camp II, and the mindless Exorcist II: The Heretic.

The good thing about this installment of the series is how it still feels like the original – mostly because many of the cast and crew return. It still has the same look, the same feel, and perhaps more importantly the same boundaries. Like Halloween II, it fully follows on from the original, even giving the audience a nice “Previously, on Hellraiser” style recap (interestingly repositioning the “Go to hell!” line where I always felt it belonged: right before the dodgy lightning effect of Pinhead, err … going back to hell). Overall, it works: and I think it will be a rare occasion where I can resist following the original with it – I never really liked that stupid dragon ending of the first anyway.
