Happy Endings
“It’s a comedy, sort of.”
I loved Don Roos’ The Opposite of Sex but though I haven’t seen his followup to that, Bounce, I got the impression it wasn’t so good. This movie is right up there with Sex for me, though. Christina Ricci’s “way ahead of you” voice-over in that movie is here replaced by title cards that slide in to fill half the screen (a DVD pan-and-scan nightmare I’ll never see, I’m sure) – telling you things like, “She’s not dead,” while a woman lies motionless and bloody in the road, “He’s not her son, in case that’s what you were wondering,” and, “When you’re a gay man, it’s hard to feel bad about yourself when your urologist says ‘yeh, I pick you.’” Multiple stories mesh and converge onscreen and it’s a little hard to keep up at times, especially at the end, but this is a movie I’ll be watching many times again, there’s so much love in it. Maggie Gyllenhaal has a great singing voice, too, hope she does an album or something some day.
