Gremlins
One of my favourite Christmas movies … and yes, I believe it is totally a Christmas movie. The story Phoebe Cates’ character (I swear she gets cuter every time I see this) tells about how she found out there was no Santa Claus – which always comes later in the movie than I remember and this time I was worried Channel 4 had cut it like they seemed to have cut a lot of the gory bits, must buy the DVD before next Christmas – it’s one of my favourite scenes in any movie, but particularly among Christmas movies … you just really don’t know whether to laugh or cry. “Do You Hear What I Hear” – I’ll never hear that song and not think of liquidised gremlins, thank you Joe Dante. And then the montage of the creatures wrecking havoc on the town, including stairmaster lady and mailbox man, still cracks me up no end. Jerry Goldsmith’s score, brilliant.
