Girl from Rio aka Chica de Rio
Maybe it’s ‘cos I watched the guiltiest of pleasures, “Mr. Bean”, for the first time in years just hours before flicking randomly onto this, so I was already kind of in the mood; maybe it’s ‘cos I’m sometimes just a whore for movies I’ve never heard of before – but I really loved this stupid little movie. There’s something about Hugh Laurie dancing samba around Rio in a business suit … just makes me giggle. The score’s pretty wonderful – familiar, but wonderful – and the way Orlinda goes to bite Laurie’s finger at the airport when he gestures her to shut up … omg. There’s a priceless cameo by Kacey Ainsworth (Little Mo from “Eastenders” – I know, I really shouldn’t know that, lol), too. Perhaps a bit too similar to Woman in Red for some people’s liking – though I couldn’t say really, I’m not sure if I’ve seen all of that movie – but even for all its Clockwise -ish ridiculousness, I’d recommend it anyway.
