I was honestly surprised by quite how much there was here for me to like. Beginning with the cast – how can you argue with the casting of Peter Fonda and Sam Elliot here? Then there’s Christopher Young’s slight take on the typical Western score – when Elliot and Cage ride down the road in flames towards the finale to the main theme, I couldn’t help getting a little over-excited about the whole thing. For some reason the movie overall reminded me most of John Carpenter’s Vampires and one of the Blade movies (the worst one – is that 3? I forget . . . I don’t even remember if I’ve seen 3 yet, lol) It’s cheap and cheesy, but at least it never pretends it’s anything but, and it always keeps its tongue firmly in its cheek. There are some really nice one-liners – nothing entirely sidesplitting, but overall, it’s just, y’know, fun to watch. I think if I were to watch this again, it would be with much more enthusiasm than, say, Sin City or 300. The ending in particular – really, almost everything from the aforementioned riding-down-the-road-in-flames scene onward – was surprisingly more satisfying than anticipated.
